An absolute pleasure returning to Home, having previously enjoyed both James Sommerin Restaurant and The Shed in Barry. This experience was nothing short of exceptional, from the stunning ambiance to the beautifully curated blind tasting menu. The restaurants interior is strikingly dark, moody, and intimate, with focused lighting that transforms the open kitchen into a theatrical stage. The heavy curtains enhance the atmosphere, creating a sense of anticipation and exclusivity. We began with an outstanding trio of amuse-bouches, elegantly presented on wood, stone, and terracotta: The warm cheese goujon with a crispy crust and delicate cheese shavings was pure comfort. The Crispy chicken liver parfait with curry and crispy skin, rich, creamy, and melt-in-the-mouth perfection. The seaweed cracker topped with taramasalata, citrus, and caviar, wonderfully salty with a fresh, briny finish. The homemade lava bread with seaweed butter was a lovely touch, adding a true taste of Wales to the experience. Each course of the blind tasting menu was a delightful surprise: The Serrano ham with pea puree and sage is beautifully balanced dish, complemented by an exceptional Parmesan emulsion. The Cod with herringbone caviar's perfectly poached, served with a creamy sauce, crispy potato cubes, and a velvety Vachon sauce. The Venison with compressed pear, maitake mushrooms, and Penderyn whiskey sauce, a complex dish with bold contrasts. The whiskey sauce added a touch of sweetness, though the pear’s sharpness stood out more than expected. The truffle was quite subtle but still added an earthy depth. The Raspberry souffle with raspberry coulis and tonka bean ice cream, an exquisite signature dessert and the perfect way to end the meal. The service was flawless attentive, warm, and professional. A particular highlight was a lovely interaction with James Sommerin himself, adding a personal touch to an already outstanding experience. Overall, Home by James Sommerin delivers on every level with the stunning food, impeccable service, and an intimate, immersive atmosphere. A truly memorable dining experience and a well-deserved 5-star review.
Don't be fooled by the understated ambience of this little gem of a restaurant as what you will experience once sat down is nothing short of the most exceptional gastronomic journey you could ever imagine. On arrival we were warmly greeted by the waiting staff and shown to our table. The restaurant is small but wonderfully intimate - further enhanced by the close proximity to the open-plan kitchen where you can watch every plate of food being prepared. The service throughout our meal was spot on - attentive without being stuffy and overly formal. We ordered the surprise 8 course tasting menu - both of us are vegetarian and James was more than happy to cater for this. Each course was immaculately presented without being pretentious and beautifully described to us. More importantly every dish was exquisitely flavoured. James managed to balance richness and depth of flavour whilst still achieving an incredible lightness to his food. The produce (seasonal of course) was treated with respect and techniques were applied intelligently to achieve the optimum flavour. It's hard to pick a favourite dish as every one was a stand-out in its own right but if I was forced to pick I would say these three were highlights: carrot and tarragon; pumpkin and goats cheese; parsnip and beetroot. The quality of the wine was also superb. Perhaps what made this eating experience truly special was the fact that James and daughter Georgia serve much of the food themselves and it was such a privilege to talk to them about their passion for what they do. This is not a cheap meal out by any stretch but if you are looking for a truly unforgettable restaurant experience that will be the highlight of your year then this most definitely will tick that box!
We had a wonderful lunch experience at Home Restaurant. The overall service was thoughtful and professional, with great attention to detail throughout. What impressed me most was the service provided by the male waiter (unfortunately I didn’t catch his name). His manner was consistently calm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming — a level of service that fully aligns with what one would expect from a Michelin-starred restaurant. Although the setting feels warm and familial, the quality of the service — particularly from him — brought the entire experience to another level. Thank you again to the whole team for a lovely and memorable meal.
Unique!! Almost theatre! Only eight tables surround the ‘stage’ open kitchen for all to view whilst James and his daughter Georgia craft beautiful and delicious magical combinations of flavours and delicacies. The energy is serene with James and Georgia seemingly having time to bring out your dishes and spend time chatting. If you’re a foody of any type, this is a ‘must do’ once (at least) in your life. We also stayed in the lovely apartment above the restaurant which includes some lovely bread, cheeses and home made marmalade for breakfast. Don’t eat for 48hrs before, you’ll need empty stomachs! Yum!!
From the moment you press the bell and the curtain behind the door is folded back, you know you are in for something unique and special. An element of mystery combined with a homely feel is complimented with the open kitchen in which James and Georgia meticulously build their creations. A range of bites are then followed by the tasting menu (of 5 or 8 dishes), which are all served with insight and knowledge about the source of the ingredients. The colours, aromas, and tastes are inspirational and need to be experienced. To say more would remove the mystery of the experience, as would posting lots of photos (so only posting one ).... therefore , if you've read this far, then yes, you should book and pay a visit.
Utterly phenomenal experience in all aspects. Truly unmatched in terms of atmosphere and food, everything is so well thought out and it was wonderful speaking to the team. Their passion for their art is unmatched and I would reccomend this place to anyone in a heartbeat. The bread was truly something special.
Worth the Michelin Home delivers on quality with beautifully executed dishes packed with fresh, sharp and creative flavor combinations. The intimate setting, soft and perfectly suited music playlist and the open kitchen really work well to create the atmosphere you would expect from “home”. Fantastic 4 course and 8 course lunch options are special treat!
I recently dined at that Michelin-starred restaurant offering an eight-course menu. Every dish was delicious, though the portions felt a bit large for such fine dining. I especially enjoyed the wild mushroom tartlet, the perfectly cooked partridge, and the fig-mascarpone dessert, which was wonderfully balanced. The meal ended with an impressive cheese cart featuring local selections. The wine list was superb, with an excellent selection of wines by the glass. Professional and friendly service made for an outstanding experience!
